Harriet Mackenzie Harriet studied at the Royal Academy of Music graduating with first class honours, MMus and Dip RAM – the highest award for graduates. She is a recipient of awards from the Tillett Trust, The Manoug Parikian Award, Hattori Foundation.
As well as with Retorica, she performs with a variaty of musicans: guitarist Morgan Szymanski, pianist Anna Tilbrook, Danny Driver and Christopher Glynn, in the ‘Sutherland Duo’ with Christina Lawrie (winners of the Enterprise Music Scotland Awards 2012), and ‘In Accord’ with accordionist Milos Milivojevic. Harriet is also a founder member of the unique group Kosmos performing their own compositions, arrangements and improvising (www.kosmosensemble.com). She is also half of the duo ‘Retorica’ with Philippa Mo.
Philippa Mo studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and at the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing with Professor Lin Yao Ji. Her studies were supported by the Belmore Woodgate Scholarship and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Since finishing her research studies culminating in the award of an MMus degree, Philippa now performs extensively as a chamber musician. A champion of contemporary music, Philippa has given recital/discussions and workshops on British music at the Central Conservatory, Beijing and at Bilkent and Hacettep Universities in Ankara, Turkey. She also regularly returns to coach students of the Kurmangazy National Conservatory of Kazakhstan in Almaty where she has given televised interviews and performance of British contemporary music. Philippa plays a violin by Julius Cesare Gigli from 1786.
Harriet and Philippa played for us at our December 2014 Christmas Concert and it was a dazzling performance. We have also heard rave revues about Martin, one of Sweden’s foremost guitarists,
so between them we should be in a for a real treat.
Martin Fogel is one of the most prominent guitarists to emerge from Sweden in recent years. He is a leading proponent of the guitar music of Toru Takemitsu – the Tokyo release concert of the complete solo works album was in the attendance of Takemitsu’s family – and he was recently honoured with the award of becoming an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM), in London. As well as touring extensively in his home country, he regularly performs in England, Japan and Europe. He first appeared on Swedish national TV at the age of 18, and has since given live broadcasts as well as interviews on both national TV and radio. A graduate from both the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Gothenburg School of Music, Martin went on to become a prize winner in several, major national and international competitions, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s Scholarship Awards, the Tokyo International Guitar Competition and the Toru Takemitsu Competition in Finland. He has performed at the Stockholm Concert Hall and at music festivals across Sweden and has appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. He has toured in all parts of Japan including at venues such as the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall, and has performed the guitar concertos of Takemitsu and Giuliani with the Turku Symphony Orchestra in Finland. Martin is the artistic director of Lidköping Music Festival, which is now in its 15th year.
